The armour is going to have to be simplified for the final comic, but I thought I'd play around with the design. Designing armour for a comic is a tough process. You want it to be detailed so it looks cool, but they you are going to have to draw the bastard over and over again, so you want it to be as simple as possible as well. At the start I had a kind of generic WoW feel to the Men of Weare but it was a bit boring. So, given they are religious nuts, I went for a kind of roundhead/conquistador vibe, with a bit of leather fetish corsetery and straps thrown in. It ended up looking pretty Judge Dredd but that's not a problem, old Joe has the fascist fetish thing down.
I also wanted to reference the modern Ix armour, it seemed a bit silly to have the Weare armour look a lot more medieval. The Ix have more advanced tech so they'd look a bit more riot police modern, but I wanted some of the same shapes referenced between the two, the Ix culture having come out of the Weare.
I also layered the armour so there would be a leather uniform layer and then some extra plate armour to go over the top when you go to war. Cloaks as well, they can always be used to fudge detail in big scenes. I can really see why super heroes wear lyrca now, less clothing to draw.
Chapter 3 is set during a big battle so I'm going to have to find a way to draw this stuff without losing my mind. Gotta get those boys out of their armour as soon as I can!
